The roads at the watershed would definitely not be considered expert level, but they provide enough entertainment to spend some time out in your rig exploring. FYI: learned this the hard way, but there are no facilities in this forest. In addition to the roads, there are a number of ponds to explore.

Closed?

Submitted on Jul 15, 2023

Went today to check the area out, the entire area was closed, even the main loop/road. Not sure if it was just for today or it's all closed.

Easy fun loop

Submitted on Oct 24, 2021

I wanted to get off road and this was super close by. Easy, was in 2hi. Some ruts, some big potholes. Well maintained nothing technical. Most roads were closed did the main loop. Scenic spots. I’ll go back and check when some of the other roads are open. I give it a thumbs up as Fredrick is close for lunch.

Nice views

Lots of intersecting roads. Many are poorly maintained. There was some snow on the ground that added a level of difficulty to the trail.

4WD not needed

Submitted on Oct 17, 2020

Road is basically a gravel road. We passed a few cars along the way. Looks like there used to be trails off the main gravel road but everything is gated and locked up. Pretty ride though with the leaves changing.

Roads were open!

Submitted on Jul 06, 2020

It was easy driving, but pretty. Just a couple of hikers parked along one road and lots of wildlife to see. Saw deer and a black bear on our drive through.

Better directions

Submitted on Jul 02, 2020

Here are some more specific instructions to get you to the trail head: 6010 Mountaindale Rd, Thurmont, MD 21788. This address will take you to the Trail Head Parking lot on Mountaindale Road. Mountaindale will be on the left of Route 15 north of Frederick. You take a left at Hessong Bridge Road, cross southbound Rte.15 and take a left on the access road to Mountaindale.

Pretty drive but no challenge. Never put it in 4wheel drive.
